A maternity air bed - what is it?
- Can it improve your sleep if you're pregnant?
- Can a maternity air bed lessen your back or leg pain?
- Is it safe?
- Is it even worth trying out?
First of all, if you're pregnant, the first place for you to get advice is from your doctor. This webpage is a place to find other opinions about maternity air beds, but only opinions! You and your doctor need to determine what's right for you.
What I can tell you is that I've experienced four full length
pregnancies over twenty years time and I can tell you, sleep is a
luxury when you're pregnant!
So, to better help my mothering visitors, I've been doing research on
the needs of current day mommies-to-be. Many, many of the frustrations
are exactly the same as when I went through my pregnancies..
==> I understand: sleep deprivation is a ferocious companion when you're pregnant.
I am a side and tummy sleeper. When I was pregnant, I slept regularly
with a pillow tucked between my legs and that helped considerably.
However, I still missed my deep sleep nights and I still had back and
leg pain. There is a product now, a maternity air bed, that allows pregnant mommies to sleep more easily on their side or their tummy (imagine that!).
If a maternity air bed can help a pregnant mom get a reasonably comfortable night sleep,
I'm all for it. The maternity bed (one product is called the Gentle Air
Maternity Bed) is a straightforward idea developed by an ob/gyn. It's
an inflatable air bed with a pregnant tummy-sized hole in the middle of
it. The hole apparently comes with an inflatable pillow so you can
adjust the size and firmness of the tummy-opening.
Sounds intriguing, doesn't it?
However, the real question is, does this idea actually work? Does a maternity air bed help pregnant women sleep better? Understanding that no one solution will work for everyone, I would still love to know if this product is helpful.
I have looked online at pregnancy forums, listening to moms who have used a maternity air bed or the Gentle Air Maternity air bed.
- Most of the women had positive things to say about the maternity bed.
- Most who have used it reported less back and leg pain and better sleep overall, which is great news.
- There were some women who were not happy with the air bed, stating that it simply wasn't comfortable.
All of that information is valuable to you if you're pregnant and trying to stay on top of your changing body challenges.
Something I have noticed about this product is that women either love
it or hate it. No surprise there. Pregnancy is a challenging season for
most mothers-to-be and comfort is something that can be hard to come
by. Honestly, if you find something that works for you, you won't be
able to live without it! Likewise, if a maternity air bed turns out
to be just another torture rack for your body, you'll want to keep it
far away from you.
Maternity air bed - just another alternative?
With two of my pregnancies, I slept on a waterbed. I love waterbeds and
generally get excellent sleep using one. But my beloved waterbed could
not give me enough support during those pregnancies. Usually during the
last trimesters of my pregnancies, I ended up moving to our guest room
and using a conventional mattress, which was not comfortable at all,
but was better than the waterbed mattress.
==> That's why this maternity air bed intrigues me so much. A
good quality air bed can be inflated to be quite firm and one with a
belly hole COULD be a useful alternative idea.
But only if it works!!
So, I'm asking for your comments on this issue.
- Have you used a maternity air bed or even the Gentle Air Maternity bed?
- Did the air bed improve your sleep?
- By how much and in what ways?
Alternately, if a maternity air bed did not improve your sleep, tell me that, too.
- What didn't work about the bed?
- Did you try different ways of using the bed, such as both side and belly sleeping, using extra pillows, etc.
Give me details! Simply email me your comments about using a
maternity air bed, whether it was the Gentle Air Maternity air bed or
another air bed using the form below. I'll publish what I can here on this page so other moms-to-be can benefit from your experience.
