Using career aptitude tests
to your advantage.
There are many free career aptitude tests online. One of the most highly recommended is the Mapp.test.
To get the full
results you'll need to upgrade to a paying version, but the free
results are interesting, as well and actually are a great starting
point. Plus once you're on the Mapp newsletter, you'll want to read the
career articles they send you very carefully.
Certainly, if you are past the curiosity stage of career planning,
you'll want to invest in yourself with the paid versions of a few of
these career aptitude tests. If you're like most of us, you've been
investing in other people and have neglected yourself. We all do it.
This is your chance to give yourself a real boost. If you are a mom,
please remind yourself that your investment in yourself is directly
related to how much you can help your family. Career aptitude tests and
related tools can get you to your goals that much faster.
If you've been saying "I need help deciding what career to choose", then you'll enjoy my article of the same name.
Can using career aptitude tests really
help you find a more satisfying job?
The answer is a qualified yes. The
test is really just that, only a test. It's how you use the results
that matter.
Career aptitude tests can tell you a lot about your innate abilities,
but you still have to be willing to build your skills and manage
yourself proactively if you want long-term career happiness. Career aptitude tests
are simply a starting point (which is why they are used extensively in
high school and colleges). Career aptitude tests can show you where you
MIGHT want to go, but, with test results in hand, you must then explore
your suggested options, make your own decisions, and work hard to actually get there.
So think of career aptitude tests as a road map for your future. You still have
to provide the vehicle and make the trip.
Additional resources that complement career aptitude tests.
==> Certifications
Career aptitude tests are only one type of career test. If you're
serious about your career, you'll want to cover all the bases.
Skills-based testing can be used to see if you need additional training
or discover focused interests that can be applied to your job. Brainbench is a great place to go online for skills-based testing.

==> Financial Aid
Besides career aptitude tests, skills-based testing, and expert advice,
many career changes require additional education. That means you'll
need the funds to get that education. Do you fit into any of these
scenarios?
-
Are you a mom rejoining the work force after time at home with the
family?
-
Have you decided you need to get that degree? That it's finally your
turn?
-
Maybe you started college a long time ago, but dropped out due to life
situations. Now you are ready to complete that degree.
-
My situation is different. It looks like this_________(fill in the
blank).
Anyone who fits in any of the above scenarios will need money to
get that college degree. We all tend to think of high school seniors
needing to find scholarships, but the rest of us can use them, too,
when finding ourselves needing a college education. FastWeb is a great place to look
for those scholarships because it is a one-stop shop to search for
scholarships that meet your unique needs. And it's FREE! You
don't want to turn down money for school, do you? Study what FastWeb has to offer you and incorporate it into your
total
financial aid plan.
"I've taken some career aptitude tests. Those results and
my personal situation indicate I need to look at alternative work
options."
Have you considered all your career options? Taking career aptitude
tests and fortifying your resume' are important steps to advancing or
even changing your career but what about working for yourself or working from home?
Telecommuting and freelancing are legitimate, necessary work options in
today's fast-paced global community.
Some careers fit in very well with freelancing and telecommuting, but
many do not. When I researched this career niche, overwhelmingly the
experts recommended learning how to create your own work if you are
interested in freelancing.
If you are interested in telecommuting, consider whether your current
job could be turned into a telecommuting position. Telecommuting MUST
be beneficial to your employer in some way for the scenario to work
well for everyone.
Do you feel like a budding business owner? What is the education needed to be an entrepreneur, anyway?
Career aptitude tests, skill-based tests, increasing
your education, and alternative work careers, like freelancing and
telecommuting, present the best tools and opportunities in history for modern job
seekers. Use all the tools at your disposal, present yourself
professionally, and work hard to bring the best 'you' to the
marketplace that you can. Doing so will ensure you stand head and
shoulders above the crowd.
