When you are considering a closet organizing system, make sure it can solve these two common closet challenges.

  • Find what you want when you want it.

  • Reclaim more closet storage space.

Here's a look at some of the more popular closet organizing systems available today.

A modular closet organizing system.

==>    This is a closet organizing system that is often based on the square cube. You can purchase open or closed (with doors) squares and everything stacks neatly together. There are modular closet systems that are not strictly based on the cube, however. For these, the term 'modular' means that a package closet system will fit UP TO a particular size of closet.

==>    This closet system is adjustable. You can change it to suit your ongoing needs.

==>    You can find modular closet organizing systems in plastics, wood, and laminates. Each looks and costs different.

==>    A modular closet system can easily move on in its next life to doing duty in your office or child's room.

==>    The downside to this closet organizing system is that you cannot customize it to meet highly specific storage needs.

Wood or laminate closet organizing systems.

    • If you'd like a more polished look to your closet organizing system, consider purchasing a system made of wood.
    • Check for quality. Do you want real wood (more costly) or is a laminated finish fine for you?
    • It may be more difficult to find replacement parts for these systems. What will you do if the company you buy from goes out of business in the next few years?
    • These are easy-to-clean closet organizing systems. Simply dust like any other furniture.
    • This is a visually closed system meaning you cannot see what is in the drawers when they are closed. Very neat looking, however.

    A wire closet organizing system.

==>    A simple closet organizing system you can easily install yourself. Features open, plastic-coated wire components you can assemble in a myriad of ways to customize your closet.

==>    Has plenty of accessories available to further customize your closet organizing. You can get hooks for your belts and ties, dividers to keep your shelves organized, pull-out wire baskets as opposed to traditional drawers.

==>    Look for helpful features like an open slide option. This allows you to slide your hangers along the full length of the closet bar without brackets being in the way.

==>    Consider if you need a tight mesh or an open mesh for your shelving. This is the distance between the wires on your shelving. Small or limp items could fall between an open mesh shelf easier than a tight mesh shelf. I have solved this myself by placing a plexiglass sheet on the shelf with small items.

==>     Many companies sell their wire closet organizing systems by the foot, so you only buy exactly what you need. Others offer a closet system in packages, such as 3 ft by 5 ft.

==>    You can purchase easy-to-assemble closet boxes to further organize this type of closet.

==>     These types of closet organizing systems have the advantage of being visually open so you can see at a glance where everything is.

Accessories for your closet organizing system.

    • Do you want cedar lined drawers?
    • Fancy hardware?
    • Do you want to incorporate jewelry storage into your organized closet?
    • Do you want a lingerie drawer?
    • Think about exactly what you want to store in your closet and make sure everything has a home before you purchase your closet organizing system.

Some final tips to keep in mind when choosing your closet organizing system.

    • Do you want to install your own closet organizing systems or do you want to let the professionals do it? Deciding this question will start you down the correct path for your final choice. If you want more ideas on do-it-yourself closet projects, see my article on self install closet systems.
    • Sturdy counts. A closet system is something you will use everyday and you probably won't be gentle with it. Let's face it, we're all in a hurry in the morning and the last thing most of us want (before coffee) is a frustrating experience with our closet hardware. So look for the best quality you can afford and a company that will let you get replacement pieces easily.

    • Check the drawer glides and shelving components carefully.Gadgets are cute, but only buy what you will really use. A lot of cubbies look great, but if what you really need is more hanging space for shirts or pants, those cubbies will simply get in the way.
    • Reward yourself once you get your closet organizing system in place. Let's face it. Many of us will never get our closets organized so I applaud you for getting this information and taking concrete action.
