Portable potty training - how do I do it?
That's a great question. The answer is easier than you think.
You'll need to do some upfront planning, of course. When it comes to potty training, thinking ahead and making sure you have everything you need BEFORE you need it is king!
Portable potty training - what do I need?
For on-the-go potty training, you'll need some essential supplies. You'll need the basics, such as
- wipes,
- more wipes,
- and more wipes!
- Extra clean clothes for your child,
- several clean pairs of underwear or toddler training pants (whatever kind you choose to use), and
- disposable plastic bags. You can go cheap and reuse old store bags or, if odor is a problem for you, use a sealed type zipper plastic bag. Add a drop or two of essential oil on a cotton ball to the bag to help with odor control.
- Extra patience and hugs.
For portable potty training, you'll need a potty chair of some sort. This will be different from the potty seat you have at home for your child because this potty needs to be
- portable - easy to take with you in your car or to use on outings. Think about where you'll actually put the potty in your car, for example, and make sure it will fit easily, your child can use it comfortably, and you can empty and clean it easily.
- Possibly folding. A folding potty chair makes a lot of sense in a vehicle or when you're going on an outing. A folding potty chair can fit in a backpack, for example, and go where you go.
- And/or disposable. You have two options here; either a nondisposable potty chair that you must empty and clean after your child uses it or a disposable potty seat that is designed to fold up; pee, poop, chair and all and be thrown away.
Listen, I've potty trained four children, two boys and two girls, and we didn't have all these options available to us when I trained my kids! You will be glad to take advantage of these portable potty training resources for your child!
I found that this website has a pretty good selection of
Travel Potty Chairs. You can see examples of folding, portable and disposable potty seats and discover which one or two would work best for you and your child.
Portable potty training - is it messy?
Not if you plan ahead, like we've been talking about. Look, your child is going to have accidents (if he doesn't, you're one of the fortunate few) and you need to be ready for them.
Potty training on-the-go will go MUCH smoother if you expect accidents and are ready to deal with them.
It's MUCH more stressful to try and plan your schedule around your child's unpredictable potty habits, then to introduce your toddler to a portable potty chair from the beginning of training and simply take it with you.
Include your toddler in this; ask her before you leave home, "do we have your travel potty?" This will keep her thinking about her potty duties all the time, which is what you want; to help her be aware of what her body is telling her.
Does this make sense? Remember what we are talking about is making sure you have your supplies and the potty chair of your choice and then get active with your potty training child!
Portable potty training - public restrooms.
You can go there if you want. I certainly did because I didn't have the choices available to potty training parents today.
We all know that public restrooms are not the cleanest places on earth. Not only that, they are extremely intimidating to most potty training youngsters.
Your child has enough to think about without adding the scary dimension of public toilets.
Think about public restrooms from your child's perspective for a minute.
They're big. They're cold. Mom or Dad are in a hurry when we're using them. We're told not to touch anything. They're uncomfortable, from a little person's perspective. Public restrooms are simply not HOME.
You get the picture.
But you can take control of all of that through the use of a portable potty.
Shopping? Simply take your child back to your vehicle and use your portable travel potty and you're on your way again.
Enjoying a picnic or outdoors outing? A handy folding potty means you're ready when your child is ready.
Everyone wins.
You'll have much less potty training resistance and toilet training overall goes much smoother.
Portable potty training - when it makes sense.
Consider utilizing portable potty training only after your child has a good grip on the fundamentals of potty training. After all, you'll want your toddler or preschooler to be able to focus on what you're teaching him and if you're on the go, that's no place for focus.
But after your child has the basics down, that's the time to make sure you're ready with a portable potty of some sort.
A portable potty is simply the next step in the potty training process with your child.
So plan ahead, get your portable potty training supplies ready, and you will feel confident about successfully working through this important growing-up season in your child's life.
And you did it together!
