Potty training in 3 days - easier ways to get it done.

Can you actually potty train your toddler in 3 days? The answer is a qualified yes, if you spend sufficient time in preparation and follow some straight forward rules.

Ignore the rules, however, and you will have a power struggle on your hands. A child can effectively use potty training to frustrate you for a long, long time. (I know. I have potty trained 4 children myself, 2 boys and 2 girls.)

Let's take a look at how to make potty training in 3 days as smooth as possible.

Plan well to successfully potty train in 3 days.

I can't stress this enough. In order to successfully potty training in 3 days, you've got to do some serious upfront prep work.
  • Check for signs of potty training readiness in your child.

If she's not ready, you are only wasting your time and should wait a few weeks or months.

(Remember, most children in the western world are physically and emotionally ready to toilet train between the ages of 2 and 3 years. This is only a guide, of course, some will be ready earlier, and some later.

Don't wait too long, either. Kids do have a window of readiness and once past that are much more entrenched in the habit of wearing diapers and see very little reason to give that up!)

  • Check your schedule.
You will have to devote the lion's share of your focus during those 3 days of potty training to your child. Probably, you'll want to do this at home as it's much easier and less stressful to deal with the mess and frustration of toilet training while in a familiar environment.

  • Assemble your potty training equipment.
You'll want a potty training chair or two. Grab a travel potty, as well, since at some point there will be portable potty training and it is MUCH easier to use your own familiar potty chair at this point than a public restroom.

Get together any potty training aids you'll need. Wipes, clean clothes (make sure the clothes are easy to get off and on or stay out of the way.) Any potty training rewards you want to work with.

Some parents use the naked approach when potty training 3 days and perhaps that will work for you, but it didn't for me. That approach caused my child to think that using a potty chair was only for when he was naked!

  • Keep it low key and matter-of-fact.
Sure, praise is good, but don't overdo it.

A toddler can quickly pick up on the idea that mom is willing to do or give ANYTHING to get him to pee and poop in that little chair.

Such a heady moment for a 2 or 3 year old.

Set clear expectations of what you want your child to do. Don't take it for granted that your lovely toddler understands exactly what you want. Show him or her. Let them show you how to use the potty using a beloved doll or stuffed animal. This will give you insights into what they're really thinking.

Be prepared for accidents. That will keep you from reacting in anger or frustration. Be prepared for ongoing accidents, too, not just in the 3 day potty training window. This is a lifelong skill you are asking your child to learn and it's only natural there will be numerous ups and downs for weeks, months and sometimes years. Remember, you're collecting your own potty training stories through this adventure.

You didn't learn to ride a bike in a day, did you? And once you rode, did you never fall again?

Think positive, patient, low-key and matter-of-fact while potty training in 3 days. Tons of hugs are a good idea. Save some for your toddler, too.

  • When potty training in 3 days, it really pays to come to the event with all the toilet training tips and advice you can refer to when toilet training problems come up. Keeps you from simply throwing up your hands and losing your patience.
So read as many of these toilet training advice websites as you feel are helpful. We all have a little different experience and perspectives to add to your collection.

Here are a couple of potty training guides that each have a little different perspective but both can walk you step-by-step through potty training in 3 days (or less).

Potty training - 3 days to victory!

Okay Mom or Dad. It's up to you now!
  • Check for signs of readiness BEFORE you move ahead.
  • Get yourself ready. Be prepared to focus ONLY on your child and potty training for those 3 days!
  • Assemble all toilet training equipment and guides you need in advance. And know what you're going to do with it.
  • Anticipate problems.
  • Maintain a positive, low-key and matter-of-fact attitude. Praise, but don't overdo.
And most of all, keep your 3 day potty training event in perspective. Even if your toddler is mostly successful and "gets" it, you still have months of practice ahead of you.

Expect accidents and prepare for them. You'll find set-backs will be fewer and easier to deal with if you keep this in mind when you attempt potty training in 3 days.
