Potty training chairs - choosing just what you need.

Picking out a potty training chair for your toddler is at once fun and intimidating.

Fun because, let's face it, you're excited your child is ready to get out of diapers!

Intimidating because, you can see you have choices. For a potty chair?

If you are looking at potty training chairs, you may be just starting to ask questions about how to start potty training.

Having potty trained four children, both boys and girls, I've used several different potty chairs over the years. Here's what you need to consider to get exactly what you want.

Potty training chair basics.

  • Think safety.
This seems obvious, but do pick a safe potty chair Bjorn Potty.

A few of the potty training chairs you'll find are too tippy or have sharp edges. Avoiding those potties is a good idea.

Think about the fact that your potty trainee is going to be whisking his private parts - naked! - on and off this potty training chair.

Look for anything that will poke or catch. And make sure the potty chair sits firmly on the ground (unless you're choosing a potty seat, of course.)

  • Think easy to clean.
You'll want a potty chair Smart Potty that wipes down easily and has a removable bowl to flush away the pee and poop.

Trust me, you'll want one that you can empty one-handed, preferably.

It's a nice plus if you can find one that your child will eventually be able to empty herself, too, but not necessary as you may end up using potty training seats as your child progresses, which will eliminate the need to empty the potty chair at all.

  • Think fun.
You can have a lot of fun with the design of a handpainted jungle chair Jungle Potty or throne for a king or queen.

Obviously, the point of this is to keep your toddler interested in the potty training process. Kids with a ton of imagination (I had a couple of these!) will get a lot out of a fanciful potty chair.

When you choose this type of potty chair, you are actually purchasing a piece of furniture for your child. Many of these potty training chairs convert into rockers for after potty training, making them a good value.

Check for sturdy construction, again, since obviously a potty chair of this type is going to get played with a bunch and you want the chair standing up to the use your child will give it.

Some of these chairs have extra features such as toilet paper holders. So check them out carefully to see exactly what each model has to offer.

Another angle to the fun potty chair that makes a lot of sense to me, is the musical potty chair Smart Potty.

I never used one of these potty training chairs, but the feedback of hearing music when a child pees could be a real help to a resistant potty trainee.

I would bet a mom will hear this music a lot - especially at first - with a musical potty chair. Which means the child is practicing his potty skills. A very good thing!

Another great angle to having a musical potty training chair is that you will know when your child goes potty without having to ask.

  • On the floor or on the big toilet.
Which toilet do you want your potty training child to use? Potty Seat.

This is a big question that may change over time for you as you potty train. Do you want a traditional potty chair that fits firmly on the floor or do you want to try a potty training toilet seat that fits neatly into an adult potty, thus eliminating the need to empty out the floor potty?

Sounds good, doesn't it? But my experience has been that kids feel more comfortable with their feet firmly planted on the ground when they're beginning potty training. Later on, that can definitely change.

So you might want to choose a chair that comes apart and can do both. Or pick one potty chair and one potty seat.

Remember, with a potty seat, you need a sturdy stool as your toddler or preschooler will need to be able to safely climb up on the adult potty and must have a firm place to plant his feet for an effective potty training bowel movement.

Bottom line, you'll need to carefully consider your own child's personality to determine which potty training chair is right for her.

Potty training chair and travel.

You'll want to consider getting a portable or travel potty training chair Travel Potty of some sort. Most public restrooms are highly intimidating (not to mention highly unsanitary) for your toilet training toddler.

There are many styles to choose from when picking a portable potty training chair, including disposable varieties, so look carefully and think about the activities your family participates in and imagine using a potty chair during them. That will help you choose the right potty travel chair for your needs.

Potty training chairs are definitely one of the most important potty training aids you will need as you begin the potty training process with your toddler.

Take some time to consider your toddler's needs and your own and you'll make a wise choice that will be a good fit for your growing child.
